Take the Farm Helpers Challenge
The challenge exists for Ontarians on two fronts.
Take The Farm Worker Challenge
The Farm Helper Challenge
As stated above Farmers in Ontario need help on the farms. We have relied on Migrant Workers to work on the labour-intensive farms: working in the hot sun and or in the rain, in all weather. They do this at minimum wage of $14 per hour + Accommodation and sometimes + Free Meals. Many of these workers from countries such as Mexico, Jamaica and Trinidad are not coming to Canada this growing and harvest season owing to travel restrictions or fear of contracting the virus. This 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a labour crisis especially for Ontario Farmers farming labour-intensive crops. The not so recent minimum wage increase hit the Farmers hard thus for many they find it difficult to sustain a further wage increase. Food prices will have to rise.
A challenge exists for Ontarians to find solutions: First to modify the farm work process that will severely minimise the risk to Farm Workers. When done in a methodical way under the supervision of the Farmer (who has access to and follows the protocols set by the province's COVID-19 Team) we increase the odds that a bountiful Ontario harvest will occur this 2020 growing seasons.
